Balshazar at Mira lago–Brainstorming with J on the libretto

J–When you told me the Sufi circle vision, I told you in Christian Science that the spiritualism thing gets explained as mind thoughts.  They aren’t dismissive of it happening, but pretty much say ‘telepathy happens’.

C–I don’t try to “validate” or explain such experiences. I prefer to fully experience then. The need to explain/categorize gets in way of that experience. As well as re-experience through memory and ritual

J–I get that. I don’t reflect on my telepathic experiences much. Sometimes I tell myself that’s being not much of a scientist, though. Like I said before, my stance is often to both simultaneously believe & not believe. I do flatter myself that it is quantum thinking, but it could also be intellectual laziness to not decide. Skillful means does tend to conserve energy when possible.

C–Jung wrote of a “dangerous game being played by his patient. Someone who, by a kind of cynical, dialectical reasoning, refused to take a stand–to make a moral choice.

J–My dad was kind of a hotshot, a heavy coffee drinker & cigarette smoker. He earned enough to build us a waterfront house, and died at 56 of lung cancer. I remember my mom asking me why I do everything in such a half-assed way.  I didn’t tell her it was because I don’t want to burn out like my dad.

Being lazy is not well regarded by our ‘work ethic’ culture. I think I’m dangerously transgressive about thinking things through for myself; but not in a work myself into a lather kind of way. I agree with you that not choosing–being too woo woo–is not only dishonest, but dangerous.

The history of spiritualism in the 19th century does not inspire confidence.

On the issue of being too woo-woo:  I’m stubborn about trying to make sense, even when talking about metaphysical things. I don’t see much of that going on in New Age thought.

Do you know the origin of the term metaphysical?  It’s not from ‘above physics’. Metaphysics was one of Aristotle books.  It was ‘meta’ because it came after his physics books in his oeuvre.

C–Maybe the “dangerous game” is attachment to non-duality.

J–I would agree with that.

C–Attachment to non-attachment. How does one “make sense” of that?

J–I’ve read that in buddhist meditation, the locus of activity in the brain moves away from the ordinary survival regions.  I get how reflection on emptiness could activate different insight circuits.  But like that quote i sent you a while ago says: “There is no cure for someone who is addicted to emptiness.” We go on a vision quest in our meditative mind for our dream world insight; but eventually must attend to survival needs. Like the Buddha said – the strings of our instrument should be neither too tight nor too slack.

C–I think this very relevant to propaganda issue and Evola’s spiritual racism, Bannon etc. They are exploiting that tendency, that weakness. It relates to false equivalence. And maybe false dichotomy as well.

In branding it’s called managing perceptions.  Often it’s the occupied/colonized whose perceptions are to be so managed. This involves varying degrees of psychological warfare. This is very relevant today, though I can’t explain the dynamic. But I do think Bernie supporters may be playing some form of this game.

J–I don’t track them at all

C–It’s an example maybe of how dangerous game plays out in politics.  And how this affliction is exploited by master propagandists like Putin.

J–It doesn’t evoke much for me. I see Bernie as passe.

C–I may be off base about Bernie Bros. But I do think the dangerous game is relevant to propaganda and spiritual racism, Evola, and Bannon.

J–It sounds like you have your suspicions there.  I’d be curious to see what develops for you.

C–I plan to recycle these threads into a written piece on it. To sketch it out.

J–If nothing else, this dramatic imagery could be used for your paintings. We brainstorm an opera, then you get material for your art.

I had an idea today. We could act out these signal dialogues into a movie. Clean up the dialogue so that we seem smarter of course.

C–Now we are getting somewhere. We can work our dialogue into the libretto, with Greek chorus, commenting on action. We need some romance. Vicky and Lily could enter, stage left in soprano duet:” So these guys are writing an opera? What a laugh.”

J–“Craig storms off angrily after bird shit argument. fade to black.  finis.”

Bird poop augury–11/25/17

20160919_113957In their attempts to descry portents in the flight of birds, ancient augurs oriented themselves toward the north. Flights from the right hand (East) were viewed as affirmation of the query, from the left, negation. Significantly, during the Roman Empire, this orientation was reversed. The cardinal point upon which political, ethical, and moral standards were based was suddenly reversed by Imperial decree.
Perhaps a similar reversal can help explain the spiritual affliction of Trump; as well as his seeming inability to properly honor fallen soldiers.

It might seem odd that we might learn from aviary divination something about double-speak and toxic spew of the Trump era, but ancient lore often discloses timeless truths which defy the logic on which we base our most cherished assumptions about reality today.

In Sophocles play, Antigone, Creon pits his tyrannical rule over that of non-political institutions, family ties, and the will of the gods. By refusing to bury the corpse of Polynices–who dared challenge his rule–he even tries to subordinate the gods of the underworld to his authority.
Though he claims to promote the common good–that of the city over family ties–Creon flouts divine decree, the dictates of custom and common decency. As a result, the city is plunged into a dark malaise so vividly evoked by Tiresias:

The public altars and sacred hearths are fouled,
one and all, by birds and dogs with carrion
torn from the corpse, the doomstruck son of Oedipus!
And so the gods are deaf to our prayers, they spurn
The offerings in our hands, the flame of holy flesh.
No birds cry out an omen clear and true…

The real weight of meaning is driven home to Creon by what the omens do not say, and he finally acknowledges his greatest sin–denial of sacred burial rites for a son of his predecessor, Oedipus–only after bringing ruin to his home, family, and reign.
